Bookstore History:
Around 1928 the Graymoor Book & Gift Center was given life. A tertiary brother named Xavier set up a few small card tables outside Graymoor’s Little Flower Chapel and began selling religious articles to the pilgrims and visitors to Graymoor. The store location was moved to different places on the Graymoor grounds over the years. After World War II in 1949, new buildings were erected and Brother Oliver Sheridan moved the shop to the eastside of the mountain where it resided until 1995. It was then moved to its current location on the fourth floor of the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center, the Friars’ ministry which hosts prayer and recovery retreats year round. Today, we continue to welcome multitudes of patrons, worshipers, visitors and pilgrims and we treat them all as guests and colleagues on a spiritual journey.
Graymoor History and Ministries:
Over a century ago, Fr. Paul Wattson founded the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement and headquartered his ministry at Graymoor in Garrison, New York. Since its foundation, the mission of our Friars’ work and ministries has been reconciliation and healing through atonement — the unity of men and women with God and with one another.
Today, our Roman Catholic religious community of men spread the Word to people of every race, religion, and walk of life through social, ecumenical, and pastoral ministries in the United States, Canada, England, Italy, and Japan. The Friars’ social ministries serve the poor, the needy, and the homeless, people living with AIDS, those in hospitals and prisons, and people seeking recovery from alcoholism and chemical dependency. The Franciscan Friars of the Atonement have a long ecumenical and interfaith tradition and ministry. Our ecumenical work is in the forefront of the international movement to heal the divisions within Christianity and among all faiths. Finally, our pastoral ministry is built on vigorous outreach that brings atonement to diverse peoples worldwide.
